The progressive yet traditional elite families of Gujarat, which includes the Peninsula of Saurashtra, have customarily been sending their children to Mayo College, both in the pre independence era, and after India gained independence.
With the reputation of Mayo College as a premier residential educational institution increasing exponentially, more and more students from Gujarat gained admission and thereafter passed out as alumni of Mayo College.
Ahmedabad, as the financial hub of Gujarat, has a large number of the alumni, with their residences in the metropolis, therefore it was felt that the bonding of the former students, for nostalgic and networking reasons, that earlier happened in informal get-togethers, needed to be formalised as a chapter, comprising as members, the alumni/alumnae of Mayo College and the Mayo College Girls’ School respectively, residing in Gujarat State.
The Gujarat Chapter, known as MAG – Mayo Alumni Gujarat, comprising of over 100 members, residing in the various cities, towns and villages of Gujarat, which has been active since the 1980s’, became a formal part of the OBS, Ajmer, with the passing of a Resolution in the Executive Committee Meeting of the OBS on 22 nd July, 2012.
MAG has been having regular monthly rendezvous on the 3 rd Friday of every month and an annual gala reunion towards the end of the year. The strength of the Chapter has been increasing every year, as an increasing number of alumni/alumnae residing in Gujarat are joining the Chapter. The enthusiasm and bonding of the members has ensured that every get together is a memorable one.
